Utterly fantastic. As one who tried to enter the sponsored world of Formula 3 in 1984/5, I can certainly understand the trials and tribulations that Perry McCarthy experienced trying to work his way to the top. During his rise to the top, I was familiar with many of those whom he described and could certainly sympathise/empathise with his struggles. If you race in Formula Fords (or any other minor series) and you think you want to go to the top, read this book! Truly amazing. Definitely worth a read to find out what Formula One is really like at the other end of the grid...and it ain't pretty.

Perry McCarthy, the first "Stig" on the awesome BBC show "Top Gear," has written a fabulous book about his racing career and his efforts to land a ride in a Formula One Grand Prix car. The good news - he gets an F1 ride. The bad news - it's with the ill-fated Andrea Moda Formula Team. It's funny, sad, inspiring and did I say it's funny? Highly recommended for race fans, or for anyone who likes a real-life story of someone who was actually able to go out and, pretty much all by himself, attain his life's ambition. Perry is definitely a guy I'd like to sit in a pub with and knock back a few pints of ale.

If you're into F1 or the behind the scenes world of how an auto racer survives this true account is THE book for you. I couldn't put it down.

This book was a great read and very enlightening about what it takes beyond talent to be a professional race driver (especially Formula 1). You must admire this guy even more than some of the "winners" just for his sheer tenacity! Perhaps writing books will be more fiscally rewarding for him. I sure hope so because I think the guy deserves better than he got out of racing. His writing style and humor reminds me a lot of Bill Bryson.
